Play by play

The "Play by play" spreadsheet allows us to analyze the game by showing the result of each rally in the particular game. It can be used on the bench during the game to see how the match flows and check how the team won or lost the points. Did the team make many mistakes on the row? Did they score a lot of points in a row? Which skill was most important in a particular phase of the game? In which rotation team scored the most points? All these and many more questions can be answered by analyzing the data that we can find in this spreadsheet.

How does it work?

In the first sheet, you will find the home and away setters and scores of the particular sets in the analyzed game. On top of each sheet regarding particular sets, you can find the set number, team names, and the present score of the particular set. Below, you can see, point by point, how the set went. Next to each point in one of the four columns, you can find the final result of the action. On the left side, you have information about the home team, and on the left side - about the away team.

Looking from the left, you can see:

  • home team rotation

  • the player of the home team who served the ball (if they were serving)

  • if the home team won the rally - who scored this point and in what way

  • if the home team lost the rally - who made a mistake this point and how

  • point difference - if the home team had advantage you would see here as many stars as high the advantage was

  • home team points

  • away team points

  • point difference - if the away team had advantage you would see here as many stars as high the advantage was

  • if the away team lost the rally - who made a mistake this point and how

  • if the away team won the rally - who scored this point and in what way

  • the player of the away team who served the ball (if they were serving)

  • away team rotation

This spreadsheet allows us to control how the game is going. f. g. Which player has problems in the last few actions, or who is the most successful? It helps the coach make good and quick decisions during the game and analyze the game after it's finished. It is also easy to see how many times a particular player served in a row, and in which element the team scored after his serve. You can also analyze the team's behavior regarding the score. To sum up, this spreadsheet can be used in many different ways and helps better analyze team performance.
