This spreadsheet is extremely useful for pre-game analysis when you want to get valuable information about the setter and his/her side-out distribution. It can be filtered by the setter, score, and point difference.
How to use it?
The first sheet contains the distributed numbers regarding the setter repetitions by which the data is filtered by the passing quality. An attack after a positive reception is divided by the previous attack effect - the unfinished ball, blocked, or attack error. The players are sorted by position; therefore, there are tables for outsides and middle blockers. The first part of the sheet can be sorted by the setter, and the second part by the score and point difference.
The example above shows that most balls were repeatedly set to Kovacevic, to whom the setter repeated his set in FBSO in 31% of rallies. Half of these attempts ended with a kill, but the attack efficiency of these balls was 14%.
The following four sheets illustrate the distribution of the balls based on the result of the previous side-out rally. In the “Players” table, you must indicate the players from your team. The first sheet reflects all the sets after the positive receptions. The second one divides this set by rotations, and the final two sheets contain data from the rallies after neutral and negative receptions (in total) and are also divided by rotations.
Each court shows the distribution AFTER the rally in which the ball was sent to the direction marked in blue. Here, we can see that if the ball was set to the left in the previous action after reception, in the next one, this play was repeated, and 34% of the balls were sent again to zone 4. If the previous FBSO attack was from the middle, over 40% of actions were played through this zone again. When the ball was attacked from zone 2 after reception, the ball was mainly set to the middle blocker (36%) in the next attempt.
Each of these four sheets has tables following the court illustrations, which contain information about how many times the sets to particular players were repeated. In the first column, you have the number of attacks repeated. In the second column, you have all the attack attempts in the first ball side-out, and the last column indicates the percentage of attacks from repeated sets.
Important Formulas in this spreadsheet:
=VSCOUNT(VSAND(VSCELL("(1)A",$A6),VSCELL("(1)E;B-0",$A$3),"R;B-0","aS-;B-1","*R;R-1",VSOR(VSCELL("(1)A/;R-1",$A6),VSCELL("(1)A=;R-1",$A6),VSCELL("(1)A-;R-1",$A6))))
This formula counts the number of attacks in side-out (“R;B-0”), after positive reception (“aS-;B-0”), of a player from cell A6, when the ball was set by the setter from cell A3, who attacked in the rally before but this attempt was unsuccessful because there was an attack error, blocked attack or the other team defended the ball.
=VSCOUNT(VSAND(VSCELL("(1)E",$A$3),"R;B-0","aS-;B-1","*R;R-1",VSOR(VSCELL("(1)A/;R-1",$A6),VSCELL("(1)A=;R-1",$A6),VSCELL("(1)A-;R-1",$A6))))
This formula counts the sets of setter from cell A3, in side-out (“R;B-0”), after positive reception (“aS-;B-0”), to a hitter from cell A6, who attacked in the rally before but this attempt was unsuccessful because there was an attack error, blocked attack or the other team defended the ball.
=VSPER(VSAND(VSCELL("(1)A#",$A9),VSCELL("(1)E;B-0",$A$3),"R;B-0","aS-;B-1","*R;R-1",VSOR(VSCELL("(1)A/;R-1",$A9),VSCELL("(1)A=;R-1",$A9),VSCELL("(1)A-;R-1",$A9))))
This formula gives the %kills in side-out (“R;B-0”), after positive reception (“aS-;B-0”), of a player from cell A9, when the ball was set by the setter from cell A3, who attacked in the rally before but this attempt was unsuccessful because there was an attack error, blocked attack or the other team defended the ball.
=VSEFF(VSAND(VSCELL("(1)A",$A9),VSCELL("(1)E;B-0",$A$3),"R;B-0","aS-;B-1","*R;R-1",VSOR(VSCELL("(1)A/;R-1",$A9),VSCELL("(1)A=;R-1",$A9),VSCELL("(1)A-;R-1",$A9))))
This formula shows the attack efficiency in side-out (“R;B-0”), after positive reception (“aS-;B-0”), of a player from cell A9, when the ball was set by the setter from cell A3, who attacked in the rally before but this attempt was unsuccessful because there was an attack error, blocked attack or the other team defended the ball.
